South Island School has an excellent
reputation for the quality of its pastoral academic support for
students. In a review of the Pastoral System in 1999, the school was
praised very highly indeed for quality of care given to our students who
are confident that they are well know that their academic and personal
progress is closely monitored, that their successes are celebrated and
that there is guidance on hand when needed.
There are three Sections, Lower
Section (comprising of Years 7 and 8), Middle (comprising of Years 9, 10
and 11) and Senior (comprising of Year 12 and 13). An Assistant
Principal, in the role of Head of Section manages a team of Year Heads
and Deputy Heads of Year.
Each Section has an office with ICT
facilities and workspace for each Year Head. The Lower Section office
is located in the Da Vinci Building, the Middle Section office is
located on the ground floor of the Ching Ling Soong Building next to the
Interview Room and near the staff room. The Senior Section is housed in
a purpose built Senior Centre on the 6th floor of the Ching
Ling Soong building. Accommodation for the Senior School includes a
meeting room, interview room, seminar room, Direction Study area,
Careers Library, Student Common Room and Kitchen.
The student body is drawn from a wide
catchment area. Out students generally have superb levels of commitment
and excellent study habits and there are rarely any discipline problems.
At present there are 7 forms of entry
(approximately 210 students) in each year in the Lower Section and which
will continue into the Middle Section from 2005. With a new building
recently completed, the school can now expand to 7 forms of entry
throughout projected increase in student numbers, the work of this team
is valued very highly indeed.
